HTTP 410 Gone

HTTP 410 Gone means the resource was deliberately removed and won’t come back. The request contains an error or can’t be fulfilled. Retrying unchanged won’t help.

Class
4xx Client error
Standard
RFC 9110
Cacheable by default
Yes
Safe to retry
No
Go constant
http.StatusGone

What HTTP 410 means

410 is a permanent, intentional 404. It tells clients to delete their links and search engines to drop the page from their index, which Google does faster than for a 404. Use it for deleted products, expired offers and retired API versions.

Retrying

No. Fix the request first; sending it again unchanged will get the same response.

Example response

HTTP/1.1 410 Gone
Date: Wed, 21 Oct 2026 10:30:00 GMT
Content-Type: application/json

How to return 410

Node.js (Express)
res.status(410).json({ error: 'Gone' });
Python (FastAPI)
from fastapi import HTTPException

raise HTTPException(status_code=410, detail="Gone")
Go (net/http)
http.Error(w, http.StatusText(http.StatusGone), http.StatusGone)
nginx
location /private/ {
    return 410;
}
