HTTP 409 Conflict

HTTP 409 Conflict means the request conflicts with the current state of the resource. The request contains an error or can’t be fulfilled. Retrying unchanged won’t help.

Class
4xx Client error
Standard
RFC 9110
Cacheable by default
No
Safe to retry
No
Go constant
http.StatusConflict

What HTTP 409 means

Use 409 when a request is valid but can’t be applied right now: creating a user with an email that is already taken, or updating a record that someone else changed in the meantime (optimistic locking). The body should explain the conflict so the client can resolve it.

How to fix a 409 error

  • Kubernetes returns 409 when you update an object using an old resourceVersion. Fetch the latest version and retry.

Retrying

No. Fix the request first; sending it again unchanged will get the same response.

Example response

HTTP/1.1 409 Conflict
Date: Wed, 21 Oct 2026 10:30:00 GMT
Content-Type: application/json

How to return 409

Node.js (Express)
res.status(409).json({ error: 'Conflict' });
Python (FastAPI)
from fastapi import HTTPException

raise HTTPException(status_code=409, detail="Conflict")
Go (net/http)
http.Error(w, http.StatusText(http.StatusConflict), http.StatusConflict)
nginx
location /private/ {
    return 409;
}
