Frequently asked questions
What does lorem ipsum mean?
Nothing, on purpose. It’s scrambled Latin from Cicero’s “De finibus bonorum et malorum” (45 BC); the original phrase “dolorem ipsum” means “pain itself”. Because the words look like real text but can’t be read, people judge the layout and typography instead of reading the content.
Where does lorem ipsum come from?
It has been used as filler text by typesetters since at least the 1960s, when Letraset printed it on dry-transfer sheets, and it was later included with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker. Claims that it dates back to a 1500s printer are popular but have never been confirmed.
Can I get it as HTML?
Yes. Choose “HTML <p>” and every paragraph is wrapped in <p>…</p>, ready to paste into a template. Plain text separates paragraphs with a blank line, which is also how Markdown expects paragraphs.
Should I use lorem ipsum or real content?
Use real or realistic content as soon as you have it. Lorem ipsum is fine for early layout work, but real text has different lengths, long words, headings and edge cases that placeholder text hides, such as a German product name that breaks a button. Test with both.
